LIGHTING

The basking site for your terrapin should be illuminated by a heat lamp (temperature should be between 90-95 degrees F at the basking spot) and a UVB light if housed indoors (unless using a MVB which accomplishes both objectives).  The heat lamp will simulate the warmth of the sun's rays while the UVB bulb provides proper wavelengths of light that stimulate essential vitamin and calcium synthesis.  Photo periods should be equivalent to the natural day cycle for the particular season.

During the summer months, adults will typically bask for the majority of a 12 hour light cycle if undisturbed. During the the cooler, winter months, adults will still be spotted trying to squeeze every last bit of warmth that their basking areas provide, but their lighting cycle should be reduced down to 6-8 hours per day.

There are many decent options available today when it comes to providing proper lighting for your terrapins. Most of the well-known brands like Arcadia, ZooMed, Mega-Ray, and Zilla have products that you will most likely be satisfied with, but if you are wanting the best lighting for your animals, I would recommend checking out VivTech Products and their amazing SurSun UVA/UVB LED lights. I made the switch to their lights in late 2021 and I haven't had to change one of them out yet! If you are thinking about giving them a go, please use the promo code below to save 15% off of your purchase. I really don't think you will regret it.
